Overview

The workhorse rectifier. One amp average forward current, a 1000V peak reverse rating, and a forward drop of about 0.9–1.1V once it is actually passing that amp. Use it for mains-frequency rectification, reverse-polarity protection on a DC input, and — most often on a hobby board — as the flyback diode across a relay coil or small motor, where it clamps the inductive kick that would otherwise punch through whatever transistor just switched off. What it is not is fast: reverse recovery is on the order of microseconds, so it is the wrong part inside a switching regulator, where a Schottky like the 1N5819 belongs. The whole 1N400x family shares one package and one pinout and differs only in reverse voltage, so a 1N4007 substitutes for any of them.

Flyback clamp across a relay coil

Diode sits directly across the coil, reverse-biased in normal operation, so it does nothing until the coil is switched off and its collapsing field drives the drain/collector node upward.

  • Orientation is the whole point: cathode to the positive rail. Fitted the other way round the diode short-circuits the coil supply the instant power is applied.
  • This clamps the spike but slows relay release. If drop-out time matters, add a series resistor or a zener in the clamp path.

Series reverse-polarity protection on a DC input

In line with the positive supply, so a reversed barrel jack simply blocks instead of destroying everything downstream.

  • Costs you the forward drop — about 1V at high current. On a 5V input that is a real bite, and it is why a P-channel MOSFET is the better choice when headroom is tight.
  • The whole load current flows through the diode. Stay under 1A, and remember the rating assumes uncropped leads.
